DESCRIPTION
A Multimedia Experience Of Literature, History, Agriculture & Art
The National Steinbeck Center is the Gateway to Steinbeck Country, bringing to life the world of Nobel Prize-winning author, John Steinbeck. This $15 million, multi-sensory museum is centrally located in the heart of Oldtown Salinas in Monterey County. Experience a journey through seven themed theaters with film clips and interactive exhibits from East of Eden, Grapes of Wrath, The Red Pony and more. The Museum introduces visitors of all ages and backgrounds to the major works of Steinbeck, inspiring them to explore his writings.

The new Valley of the World agricultural wing shares the stories of the Salinas Valley "from field to fork"through hands-on displays, computer stations and interactive games. Visitors can vote for their favorite vegetable, play the "Produce Game" or design their own crate label.

MAJOR FEATURES

John Steinbeck exhibitions have:

  • Walk-through, multi-sensory interactive exhibits based on scenes from Steinbeck’s life and works. (8,000 square feet)
  • Walk-through, multi-sensory interactive exhibits exploring the history, innovations and technology of the agricultural industry in Monterey County's Salinas Valley. (6,500 square feet)
  • Orientation theater showing 12-minute Steinbeck biographical video and 8-minute video on agriculture – "A Bountiful Harvest".
  • Art & Cultural Exhibit Gallery (1,000 square feet), with exhibits such as the juried exhibition, "My California: Views From The Golden State" March 4, 2005 - June 5, 2005, "The Graceful Envelope" (A Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition) June 17, 2005 - Sept. 18, 2005.
  • State of the art archives including over 30,000 letters, manuscripts, artifacts, oral histories and film memorabilia
  • 100 seat indoor/outdoor gourmet café – group rates available
  • Museum Store with books, unique gifts and collectibles

3 miles from Highway 101 on California’s Central Coast;
Oldtown Salinas – historic Main St. district in Monterey County
20 miles west of Monterey, Pebble Beach and Carmel;
In the heart of Monterey County wine country; 75 miles south of San Jose;
105 miles south of San Francisco; 320 miles north of Los Angeles.
It is a destination in itself, or a convenient stop or luncheon option to compliment existing itineraries traveling the SF/LA corridor.

HOURS
Open Year Round 10am-5pm Monday – Sunday
*The museum closes at 3 p.m. the day before Thanksgiving, on Christmas Eve, and on New Year’s Eve. The museum is closed Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Annual Steinbeck Festival – 1st full weekend every August.

LENGTH OF VISIT
Allow approximately 1-2 hours for a self-guided experience. Groups are greeted by a docent volunteer who gives a brief orientation and is available to answer questions.

MEALS
The museum café “One Main Street” offers a charming farmer’s market atmosphere and is open daily for lunch. Group meals ($15.00 all-inclusive) are available with advance reservations, in the café or adjoining dining room.

PARKING
There is a passenger drop off area directly in front of the Museum. Free motor coach parking is available at the Amtrak train station, 1 block away. Directions available.
