THE
STEINBECK AREA AGRICULTURAL HISTORY
Due
to its
temperate,
Mediterranean-like
climate
and
fertile
soils,
the
county
has
become
the
number
one
vegetable-producing
region
in the
nation.
The
Salinas
Valley
has
long
been
known
as the
Salad
Bowl
of the
World,
and
was
referred
to by
John
Steinbeck
as "The
Valley of the World." In
order
to
document
the
region's
rich
agricultural
heritage,
the
Center
expanded
its
collection
to
include
a
variety
of
artifacts
chronicling
local
agricultural
history.
Items
include
taped
oral
history
interviews,
magazine/newspaper
articles,
photographs,
ephemeral
items,
and
equipment
used
by
farmers,
shippers,
and
workers
to
sell
and
promote
their
products.
