An
interesting interpretation of the late Colonial Revival style for
an apartment complex. The decorative vocabulary of the style is
employed asymmetrically to convey a sense of interior function.
This type of building in the Steinbeck historic district is indicative
of the continued role of the Archer/Cassidy block as a working class
housing area adjacent to a fashionable Central Avenue residential
street.
This
Queen Anne and salt box combination may be indicative of the economic
development as well as changes in architectural fashion that characterized
Salinas in the 1880's and 1890's.
A
early Salinas rooming or boarding house that has been rehabilitated
for residential use. Its proximity to the Southern Pacific railroad
suggests that industry was responsible in part for the initial buildup
of this part of Salinas.
