William Nesbitt was elected the Salinas Town Marshall in 1882, one year after marrying and moving into this vernacular-style house. This house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nesbitt became County Sheriff in 1902 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1923.
Vernacular architecture applies to traditional American architecture that was passed on to successive generations of builders and designers through the use of materials, shapes and textures, spatial organization, proportions among elements, and systems of ornamentation. Elements include double-hung sash windows, horizontal wood siding, shed roof porches with square posts and a minimum of ornamentation.
This Queen Anne style home was designed by architect William H. Weeks in 1904 for Sheriff Nesbitt. This and the first Nesbitt home next door represent changes in the residential architectural styles in Salinas as well as the economic development of the community over a period of 25 years. |
