Work Schedule: Monday through Friday. Some weekends, evenings, and during
special events.
Basic Function:
Responsible for unearned/contributed income for the National Steinbeck Center.
Organizational Relationships
Line
- Responsible to the Chief Executive Officer for the successful performance of assigned responsibilities.
- Serve on the National Steinbeck Center Management Team.
- Serve as a staff liaison to the National Steinbeck Center Board of Trustees Executive Development Committee and other related committees.
- Responsible for the direct supervision of the following: Development and Membership Coordinator.
- Responsible for Special Events, Grants and Sponsorships.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Ongoing
- Establish and manage development plan, staff and budgets.
- Provide institutional vision and leadership and create and implement annual plan for all fundraising efforts of the National Steinbeck Center.
- Work with appropriate staff, consultants, interns, trustees, board members and volunteers to execute and/or supervise all fundraising activities including, but not limited to:
- Annual giving program
- Membership program
- Major gifts program
- Planned giving program
- Government foundation and corporate grant writing
- Capital campaign and related activities
- Endowment program
- Donor recognition and other special events and projects
- Sponsorship program- development and fulfillment
- Fundraising events
- Cultivate and solicit potential and current donors via personal contact, board involvement, media contact and other appropriate fund raising tactics.
- Create, review, and conduct performance appraisals of department staff and take appropriate disciplinary action when deemed necessary.
- Consult frequently with the Executive Director and Management Team in order to provide a unified effort and message
Other
- Perform any special projects as directed by the Executive Director, advisory board chairs, or Board of Trustees.
- Be family with all National Steinbeck Center programs.
- Represent the National Steinbeck Center and its program areas in professional and community activities as deemed appropriate.
- Develop and maintain relationships with key personnel from local, regional and national funding sources, foundations and corporations.
- Develop and maintain relationships with local, regional and national fundraising organization
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in business and five years experience in fundraising for non-profit organizations or equivalent.
- Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, including ability to craft message and approach to different audiences.
- Ability to work independently but within the scope of the organization’s mission.
- Strong leadership skills, including ability to motivate, coordinate and work with people at all levels of the organization.
- Basic accounting proficiency, including preparing budgets, financial summaries, and reports.
- Significant contacts in the business, entertainment and donor community.
- An interest in and knowledge of John Steinbeck, his works and/or other literature preferred.
- An interest in the Salinas Valley – its history, and the people.
Other Requirements
- Fluency in English. Fluency in Spanish a plus but not required.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects at one time.
- Good time management skills.
- Excellent team player with the ability to work with staff of all levels.
- Proficient in the use of PC programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, the internet, and experience with Raiser’s Edge preferred.
- Must be able to operate general office equipment, i.e. faxing, postage meter, copy machine, etc.
- Must possess a valid California Driver’s License and a vehicle.
- Must be capable of lifting up to 20 pounds.
- Must be capable of climbing up and down a ladder.
- Must be able to hear and speak clearly.
- Must be able to alternatively sit, stand and walk at least 8 hours per day.
- Must be available some nights and weekends for special events and programs.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Sales Associate

SUMMARY OF POSITION
- Maintain the Museum Store appearance and stock items as needed
- Process admission to the Museum, merchandise sales in the Museum Store and special orders
- Orient patrons to the Center’s facilities and welcome guests to the Center
- Promote membership, changing exhibitions, programs and donations to patrons of the Center
- Assist with annual and mid-year inventory, merchandising and in-store promotions
- Open and close exhibition halls, changing galleries and the Center’s other facilities on a daily basis
- Answer phone inquiries and patron questions
- Other tasks as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Associates degree or Museum Store experience required.
- Experience using Retail Pro or similar P.O.S. software desired.
- Experience in retail or wholesale business required.
- Knowledge of product development and visual display desired.
- Out-going, service-driven and organized.
- Passion for and knowledge of books.
- An interest in John Steinbeck, his works and/or other literature preferred.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Fluency in English required
- Fluency in Spanish. Preferred but not required.
