SCHEDULING A VISIT
School and youth group visits are available by reservation only and are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. It is highly recommended that reservations be made at least one month in advance. We will send you a confirmation packet which includes: a confirmation of your tour date and time, a teacher’s contract, visit guidelines, directions, parking instructions, chaperone handouts, samples of the gallery activities, suggested pre and post visit activities for use in the classroom, and payment instructions. Advance reservations are required for school groups. Please call (831) 796-3833 x-222 or email education@steinbeck.org to reserve your visit today.

The National Steinbeck Center can accommodate up to 35 students per arrival time. If your group contains more than 35 students, our staff can assist you in designing a successful fieldtrip experience by using self-guided walking tours, other educational opportunities in the area, and staggering arrival times. Our Education Department staff can be reached at (831) 796-3833 Ext. 222 or education@steinbeck.org.

SCHOOL/YOUTH GROUP FEES
(with advance reservation)
Monterey County Schools:
Free (with 3 weeks advance booking)

Other Schools:
     $5.00 per student

Youth Groups:
     $5.00 per student

There is a $35 minimum charge. For all groups, teachers and chaperones are admitted free. Museum members receive a 10% discount. All fees include museum admission, gallery activities, classroom use of one of the orientation videos and the walking tour.

Fee waivers are available for some classes depending on their financial circumstances.

LENGTH OF VISIT
A typical museum visit will vary between 1 to 4 hours in length depending on the activities in the gallery and the age of your group. An additional hour is required if you choose to include a walking tour or a visit to the First Mayor’s House as part of your visit.

CHAPERONE REQUIREMENTS
Your group will need adult chaperones for your visit at the Center. For grades 9-12, one adult chaperone for every 10 students is required. These chaperone requirements are necessary to ensure that your students and our other visitors enjoy their museum visit.

LUNCHES
Bag lunches may be eaten in the Center’s courtyard—please reserve the space when you make your reservation. Boxed lunches are also available through the Center’s café for an additional fee and may be ordered by calling (831) 775-4735. Please note that we do not have an alternate space for your class in the case of cold or wet weather.

PREPARING FOR YOUR VISIT
Your fieldtrip begins when you receive your confirmation packet. This packets includes samples of activities your students do when they visit the Center and ideas for classroom activities. Two weeks before your fieldtrip, we send you a copy of one of the orientation videos. Steinbeck: Experimenter, Philosopher, Traveler, Writer is a 13 minute video about John Steinbeck, his life, and his writings. A Bountiful Harvest is a 9 minute video that talks about agriculture - both past and present - in the Salinas Valley. One of these videos are available for teachers to use in the classroom as part of the fieldtrip program fee. We strongly encourage all teachers to discuss either video with their class to build prior knowledge and enthusiasm for visiting the National Steinbeck Center.

THE DAY OF YOUR VISIT
On the day of your visit, a staff member will meet you and your class in front of the National Steinbeck Center. After you have registered your group, the staff member will lead you into the museum and give a brief overview of your visit.

Your students can begin with a self-guided tour of the John Steinbeck Exhibition Hall or the Valley of the World Agricultural Wing. Most classes use the middle school or high school “treasure hunts” to enrich the students’ experience in these exhibits, which they complete in small groups. Age appropriate activities are also available for elementary school groups to guide them through the exhibitions. Booking a Steinbeck Alive! performance at the museum, such as Tom Joad or John Steinbeck, makes your visit more memorable.

Some groups opt to go on a self-guided walking tour of Oldtown Salinas before or after their museum tour. The walking tours are age appropriate, interactive and are very useful in staggering arrival times for larger school groups.

The Education Department of the National Steinbeck Center is available to help tailor your fieldtrip to meet your students’ needs and interests. Please let us know any special circumstances or requests. You can contact the Education Department at (831) 796-3833 ext. 222 or via email at education@steinbeck.org.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES IN STEINBECK COUNTRY more
There are many other educational opportunities for school groups that will help you “make it a day” in Steinbeck Country. In addition to visiting the National Steinbeck Center, your students could have lunch at the Steinbeck House; visit The Farm, a full service produce market; visit with wild animals at Wild Things Animal Rentals; tour Cannery Row and visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium; and much more.
