This interesting
residence had its origin in medieval Northern European country houses.
More French Manor in feeling than English. elements of both forms
are present. Note rustic wood shingles effecting the appearance
of thatching, bell cast design over entry, multi-paned metal casement
windows, and tall stuccoed and wall chimney.
A very successful
'romantic" house successfully employing elements from two picturesque
styles, the French and Spanish Eclectic. The rounded turret is a
French Normandy element; the large recessed round-headed multi-paned
window is typical of Spanish Eclectic; and, the projecting roof
overhang which covers a balcony area is reminiscent of the Monterey
Colonial style.
French Eclectic
style included several elements utilized on this house: tripped
steeply pitched roots with shingles effecting the look of thatching,
and multi-paned casement type windows.
The large roof
dormer makes this structure particularly interesting because these
features were rarely used in the style.
This house
was designed by contractor Ernest F. Reese who also designed Judge
H.E. Jorgensen's houso at 14 Los Laureles; and who worked on alterations
to the Franciscan and Cominos Hotels.
