School/Youth Group Fees
Monterey County Schools – FREE
Other schools and Youth Groups - $5.00 per student

There is a $35 minimum charge for groups. For all groups, teachers and chaperones are admitted free. Museum members receive a 10 percent discount. All fees include museum admission, gallery activities, and the Oldtown Salinas self-guided walking tour.

The National Steinbeck Center can accommodate up to 70 students per arrival time. If your group has more than 70 students, our staff can assist you in designing a successful experience by using self-guided walking tours, other educational opportunities in the area, and staggering arrival times.

Chaperones
Your group will need adult chaperones for your visit at the Center. We require one chaperone for every five students. Chaperones are admitted for free.

Lunches
Bag lunches may be brought and eaten in the Center’s courtyard – please reserve the space when making your reservation. There also many restaurants in the Oldtown Salinas area available for lunch.

What You’ll See on Your Fieldtrip
John Steinbeck Exhibition Hall
The John Steinbeck Exhibition Hall is a multimedia, interactive journey through the life and works of Salinas’ native son. Vivid environments bring the places and experiences of John Steinbeck’s world alive for all ages and backgrounds. Students can climb on the Red Pony in the barn, sit with George and Lennie in the Bunkhouse, experience life in a Dust bowl migrant camp, hear the seagulls in Cannery Row and follow the adventures of Steinbeck and his dog Charley in his camper “Rocinante.”

Rabobank Valley of the World Agricultural Museum
With a strong focus on the individuals, immigrant groups and families that shaped Salinas Valley agriculture, this innovative exhibition is an educational adventure for students across California. The multimedia experience features audio clips, photographs, film footage, personal memorabilia, unique tools and clothes and artifacts used throughout the decades. Current topics such a water and land use, innovations and labor issues are highlighted in the Valley of the World exhibition.

Art and Cultural Exhibits
Take advantage of our special art and cultural exhibits. These high-quality exhibits vary greatly in content and medium, from landscape paintings from the 1930’s to produce crate labels to photography.

The National Steinbeck Center offers many classroom resources for teachers at all grade levels.

The Gift of Imagination: John Steinbeck’s Childhood
This charming book is written from the point of view of young Mary Steinbeck as she and her older brother, John, go about their daily lives in Salinas, California at the turn of the century. With beautiful, four-color watercolor illustrations and third grade appropriate text, this book focuses on John Steinbeck's imaginative experiences as a young boy. (32 pages) $12.95

A Century Ago in Steinbeck Country
Third Grade History-Social Science and Language Arts Curriculum
This third grade program is a standards-based curriculum that was written to enhance students' understanding of daily life a century ago through the life and writings of John Steinbeck. While the Salinas Valley is used as an example, the major themes and activities of the curriculum can be adapted to almost any community in California. Activities include journal-writing, interviews, map work, arts and crafts, poetry, and more. The curriculum is anchored by a full color picture book, The Gift of Imagination: John Steinbeck's Childhood and contains five units, each consisting of three to four 45-55 minute sessions, and visuals for classroom use. $39.95

Teaching Twentieth Century History through Steinbeck’s Eyes
11th Grade History-Social Science and Language Arts Curriculum
This 11th grade program is a standards based curriculum that revolves around the life and works of an American writer, John Steinbeck. The curriculum includes five lessons that enhance classroom instruction about the Great Depression, World War II, environmental issues, and American society in the 1960's. Activities include Reader's Theater, creating a personal timeline, observational writing, and more. The lessons are featured in a teacher friendly format and include a four color time line and other visuals to use in the classroom. $29.95
