This new program in the schools brings Steinbeck, his mother, and
characters from his books to life in the classroom! Dont miss
this wonderful opportunity to breath life into Steinbecks
works for your students. Each program includes a 15-minute presentation
by an actor from The Western Stage, suggested classroom activities,
and a discussion period about Steinbeck and his works. The
performances featured are:
Elementary

A Young John Steinbeck
Middle School:
Jody from The Red Pony
Kino from The Pearl
High School:
Tom Joad from The Grapes of Wrath
Emiliano Zapata from Viva Zapata!
Steinbeck Alive!
is designed to be an experience for one or two classes and is limited
to 70 students. Schools are encouraged to book multiple performances
on the same day to accommodate larger student audiences. Performances
may also be booked to coincide with fieldtrips to the National Steinbeck

LENDING LIBRARY
The National Steinbeck
Center offers resources for teachers who need classroom-sets of Steinbeck
books or photographs to enhance their existing curriculum. These books
and visuals may be rented for a specified amount of timesee
below for complete descriptions and prices.
STEINBECK
PHOTOGRAPHS
Growing Up Steinbeck
This packet includes photographs of Steinbeck as a young boy, his
family, and scenes of Monterey County from the turn of the century.
The Dust Bowl
Photographs of Dust Bowl migrants are the focus of this packet of
photographs to visually demonstrate the hardships of the 1930s.
Steinbeck and Mexico
Scenes from Steinbecks journey to the Sea of Cortez and images
from the films The Forgotten Village, The Pearl, and Viva
Zapata! highlight Steinbecks love of Mexico.
Cannery Row
This packet includes images of the old canneries, the characters
from Steinbecks Cannery Row, and Docs Lab.
Scenes of the Salinas Valley
Perfect resources for teaching The Red Pony or Of Mice
and Men, this packet includes scenes of the Salinas Valley,
the ranches from Steinbecks childhood, and old photographs
of Oldtown Salinas.
Steinbeck as a War Correspondent
Photographs of Steinbeck during World War II and the Vietnam War
will assist teachers who wish to include The Moon is Down, Once
There Was a War, or other writings by Steinbeck during his time
as a war correspondent.

Teachers may rent a set of thirty Steinbeck books for use in their
classrooms for a one month period. Packed in a small suitcase with
wheels, these sets of books are perfect for teachers wanting to
introduce new books into their curriculum or schools without sufficient
funds for purchasing books. The following books, all written by

VIDEO
RENTAL
Steinbeck: Experimenter, Philosopher, Traveler, Writer is a
13 minute video about John Steinbeck, his life, and his writings.
This video may be rented for a two-week period for use in the classroom
to enhance students understanding of John Steinbeck and his
stories.
