Phil Ralls First Editions

Phil Ralls First Editions

STEINBECK FIRSTS is material primarily intended to help readers distinguish the original first editions of fifty important Steinbeck books, pamphlets and keepsakes from the other issues or editions of those works.  The material – meticulously compiled over many years by Dr. Philip W. Ralls – uses detailed images of front and back covers and spines, title, copyright and other key pages and dust jackets along with Ralls’ explanatory text to illustrate points that identify the first editions and, in many cases, later issues or editions as well.  Steinbeck Firsts is far more revealing and easier to use than the traditional descriptive bibliographical text employed for that purpose, for example, in the Goldstone & Payne and Holmes Steinbeck collection catalogues.  Readers will find this material full of interesting and helpful information.  It was a work in progress, and Ralls did not live long enough to complete his examination of The Red Pony, The Moon Is Down, A Russian Journal or the Forward to Between Pacific Tides, but what he has given us is golden.  It is offered on this web site with permission.  Enjoy! –Kenneth Holmes
