September 9 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join us for a FREE screening of On Two Fronts: Latinos & Vietnam as part of our 2019 Common Read.

On Two Fronts: Latinos & Vietnam is a Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) documentary by producer Mylène Moreno, which takes a comprehensive look at the Latino experience in both the home-front and the battle grounds during the Vietnam War. The documentary tells the case of Everett Alvarez and Delia Alvarez, brother and sister who stood on opposite sides of the Vietnam War

This year’s Common Read focuses on Thi Bui’s debut illustrated memoir, The Best We Could Do, an intimate and poignant graphic novel portraying one family’s journey from war-torn Vietnam. Bui was born in Vietnam three months before the end of the Vietnam War, and came to the United States in 1978 as part of the “boat people” wave of refugees from Southeast Asia. The 2019 Common Read Film Series is intended to give community members additional perspectives to the themes and topics covered in The Best We Could Do. The Common Read is a program of the National Steinbeck Center in partnership with several community partners. For more information about the 2019 Common Read, please contact tara@steinbeck.org
