Persepolis is the film adaption to the graphic autobiography by Marjane Satrapi that depicts her childhood up to her early adult years in Iran during and after the Islamic Revolution. Thi Bui cites Persepolis along with Maus as two of her major inspirations when writing The Best We Could Do.

Introduction: Lisa Josephs, NSC (on Steinbeck graphic novel Of Mice and Men and Salinas Valley Comic Con)

This year’s Common Read focuses on Thi Bui’s debut illustrated memoir, The Best We Could Do, an intimate and poignant graphic novel portraying one family’s journey from war-torn Vietnam. Bui was born in Vietnam three months before the end of the Vietnam War, and came to the United States in 1978 as part of the “boat people” wave of refugees from Southeast Asia. The 2019 Common Read Film Series is intended to give community members additional perspectives to the themes and topics covered in The Best We Could Do. The Common Read is a program of the National Steinbeck Center in partnership with several community partners. For more information about the 2019 Common Read, please contact tara@steinbeck.org
